About the Museum

The Ayahuasca Museum is the first and only museum in the world dedicated to the traditional ceremony of the Amazonian shamanic tribes. It was founded in 2021 on the territory of the Cordillera Escalera Ecolodge in the town of Tarapoto which is almost situated at the border of the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area.

The Museum collection occupies an exhibition area of almost 140 m². It consists of relics from private collections and artefacts purchased from local residents.

The Museum is designed for those interested in the history and culture of Peru and shamanic ceremonies as their integral part.

The Museum was created for educational purposes only. It does not campaign or agitate for participation in Ayahuasca ceremonies.

The goal of The Museum is to provide comprehensive, research-based and evidence-based information about the Ayahuasca ceremony.

The Purpose of the Museum

For several years, we have developed the concept, accumulated materials and exhibits, and consulted shamans and experts who study the history and the modern life of the Amazonian tribes. We have also studied the great Amazonian healing practices. The Museum collection occupies an exhibition area of almost 140 m². It consists of relics from private collections and artefacts purchased from local residents. The Museum is designed for those interested in the history and culture of Peru and shamanic ceremonies as their integral part. The Museum was created for educational purposes only. It does not campaign or agitate for participation in Ayahuasca ceremonies. The goal of The Museum is to provide comprehensive, research-based and evidence-based information about the Ayahuasca ceremony.

Exhibition Stands

The stands provide information about the Ayahuasca ceremony, its history and legends, about the Peruvian Master Plants and their influence on human health and worldview. The founders of the Museum have collected testimonies of our contemporaries who have experienced healing ceremonies and other interesting materials related to the Amazonian nature and tribes. In the showcases and installations, visitors can see principal ceremonial tools. Meticulously compiled Museum labels include information on their purpose. Unusual installations and documentary materials provide answers to many questions that people who are at the very beginning of their acquaintance with the Ayahuasca tradition often have. The exhibition is presented in Spanish and English. Tourists from Russia can turn to a Russian-speaking guide or folders with the translated texts of all the stands. The Ayahuasca Museum gladly and gratefully accepts interesting project-related materials as donations or for a reasonable price.

Organization of Lectures

It is possible to organize seminars, conferences and concerts for the groups of up to 30 people in the exhibition hall. The necessary furniture (tables, chairs), presentation equipment and a small stage are available.

Places

The Museum features a mini library, a cosy bar and a gift shop. Creative photo zones are available.

Banisteriopsis Kaapi

In front of the Museum, you can observe the Banisteriopsis kaapi vine (the main component of the Ayahuasca drink) and the Uncaria Master Plant (the Cat’s claw) in their natural habitat.

Virtual Reality

Museum visitors have the opportunity to experience the Ayahuasca ceremony through virtual reality. A French film director Jan Kunen and the famous shaman Guillermo Arévalo have shooted a 20-minute film specifically to be viewed with VR glasses. The film represents a brief and realistic reproduction of the ceremony. More details
